Learner driver overtakes going into roundabout

This roundabout has an island on the approach and the driver swerved left at the last moment to avoid it, nearly clipping me. Why they had to overtake at that moment is beyond me. It's Sunday, there is next to no traffic on the roads and it's not like they were suffering major congestion and delays. The instructor should have known better and told the learner to just wait.
