Real Doozy!

This one is a real doozy, because I’m not even sure it was worth posting here on UpRide.

As you can see, this is a one-way cycle path, while the cycle path in the opposite direction is actually on the street. It’s a very quiet street, but it is still a street.

This woman was riding toward me, head-on, with her child. She told me she was protecting her child, and I completely understand that instinct. She obviously didn’t want her child riding in the street.

The problem was that she was coming around the bend on the wrong side a one-way single file bike path, directly toward me. Luckily, I saw her in time and I have good brakes, so I was able to stop safely.

But I couldn’t help thinking afterward that perhaps the safest option would have been to get off the bike and walk with her child on the sidewalk for that short stretch. There are plenty of cyclists who come through there on Tour de France-style bikes at considerable speed, and they might not have had the same reaction time—or the same outcome.

What do you all think? I feel like this is one of those genuine gray areas where you can understand both sides. I completely understand wanting to protect your child, but I also wonder whether riding head-on into oncoming cyclists is actually the safest solution.
