When Drivers Ignore the LAW: A Cyclist Harassed on a Bicycle-Only Street

Paris, France

25 Jun, 2026 - 5 days ago - on Rue De Charenton

This one is a real doozy. I was riding on a street that is clearly designated for bicycles "Vélorue". The signs at the entrance and throughout the street are very clear: cars are not supposed to use it except for specific authorized reasons, and if they are present, they must stay behind cyclists and keep a safe distance.

As you can hear in the video, this driver spent the entire two blocks honking, shouting, and trying to intimidate me. At one point, even a pedestrian intervened and told her to stop because I was on a bicycle and had every right to be there.

When we reached the traffic light, I explained to her in French that this was a bicycle street and that her behavior was not acceptable. She continued shouting and arguing. I told her she was being filmed, that I had her license plate, and that her actions could have consequences.

What is most troubling is this attitude that some drivers have: when they see a cyclist, they immediately assume the cyclist is the problem. But the rules are there for a reason. Cyclists have the right to use spaces that are specifically designed for them, and drivers must respect those rules.

During a heat wave, when cities are trying to reduce pollution and encourage alternatives to cars, it is especially disappointing to see this kind of aggression toward people who are choosing a cleaner, healthier way to move around.

Respect the signs. Respect the cyclists. Respect the law. A bicycle is not an obstacle — it is legitimate traffic.
